To “extend the learning” in your Insect Unit, try a classroom bug hunt. Cut out each of the different insects below and hide them around the classroom. Then break up the class into small “hunting parties” and have them search for insects. In good weather, these activities can be done outside.

In Activity 1, students collect the bugs, bring them back to their desks and identify them using the Insects of the World sheet. They can then label each of the insects on the check list or draw a line to each from their name on the list.

In Activity 2, students use the use the Insects of the World sheet to identify the insects they find as they go (without collecting them) and check them off the Bug Hunt Check Sheet. They can then label each of the insects on the check list or draw a line to each from their name on the list.
