Duiker (Blue)

Range

The blue duiker is found in Africa.

Habitat

They live in the dense rainforest.

Body Traits

The smallest antelope, they weigh from 10-20 pounds and are only about 2 feet long. They have scent glands under each eye to mark their territory. They have tiny horns.

Habits

They are the only antelope that will eat meat.

Diet

They eat fruit, buds, stems, leaves, seeds and grasses. They sometimes even eat birds and rats. They often sit under trees where monkeys feed to wait for fallen fruit. Fruit is more than half of their diet.

Predators

Predators are the leopard, smaller wild cats, civet, eagle, crocodile, and python.

Reproduction

Duiker mate for life (monogamous). They have one kid each year. Females are pregnant for 4 months (gestation). They have their babies at any time of year. For the first month after the kid’s birth, the male will protect the territory where the female nurses and cares for the baby.
