Scientific Phenomena

Scientists in two studies have noted that climate change has resulted in the melting of the Arctic sea ice passages that wildlife use to migrate throughout the year. This fragmentation of their habitat will result in major changes in how populations, like the caribou, will find safe calving grounds.

Even plants are affected by the loss of sea ice passages. Studies have revealed that seeds were carried in the hooves or fur of migrating animals or the creep of ice itself to recolonization of northern areas after the last ice age.

As the sea ice melts, another change has occurred. More sunlight is reaching the Arctic ocean's surface which has significantly increased marine plankton growth.
