Build and display small acorn figures using objects found in nature. Follow the directions and watch your young students become enamored with the process and what they can create.
Materials:
• Collect: acorns, acorn tops, dry leaves, sticks, flower heads, seed pods, maple seeds, feathers, lichens, etc.
• twine, scissors, press on wall hook
• glue gun (low temperature glue gun and an adult to wield it) and extra glue sticks
• newspaper to protect work surface, card board for glue
Activity:
1. Have kids collect acorns and other wild items from the forest and/or yard. Find an arm-length stick for mounting your people later.
2. Spread out items on a piece of newspaper on your work surface.
3. Collect and lay out the pieces for your first acorn person.
4. Break sticks into arm and leg sized pieces. Prepare other forest items for your first acorn person.
5. Whoever is tending the glue gun should squeeze a small puddle of glue on the card board.
6. Artists can dip their pieces in the glue and stick them on their acorn people. Hold in place for 30 second to secure the bond. Then let it rest on the newspaper for another few minutes to sure of a solid bond.
7. After completing several acorn people, glue them to the arm-length stick you collected.
8. Tie a loop of twine around the top of the stick and hang it from your press on wall hook. Make sure to leave enough room for your stick to hang down on the all before you secure the hook.
9. Enjoy your little people!
