Cellular Respiration - Authentic Performance Activity

Authentic Performance Activities facilitate a student's understanding of a lesson's usefulness in real life. They are also an Understanding by Design (UbD) assessment tool. Focus questions act as pre- and post-assessment indicators of the activity's effectiveness.

Focus Questions:

1. Why do we learn about how the body breaks down food?

2. Would knowing about how the body turns food into fuel affect our meals (or the meals we recommend to a patient) before a sporting event?

3. Could knowing how the body turns food into fuel help you do better in a sporting event?

Authentic Performance
You are a marathon runner and need extra energy for tomorrow’s race. How would eating pasta (and pie) help your body produce the energy it needs? Be sure to describe what will happen when you are running the race (and breathing hard). Use the diagram below to help form your answer.
