Range  

They are found in India, China, Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Habitat  

They live in evergreen and wet deciduous forests.

Body Traits  

The largest hornbill, reaches 2.5 feet tall. They have a large horn (a casque) on their big down-curved bill. This helps them make their call. They are mostly black with a yellow neck and bill and white on their wings and feathers. Their feathers are yellow from the hornbill’s oil glands. Males have red eyes ringed in black skin. Females have white eyes with pink skin.

Habits  

Hornbills mate for life.

Diet  

They eat mostly fruit, but will also eat lizards, small mammals, and insects. They help spread forest seeds.

Reproduction  

The female nests in a hollow tree, sealing herself, in while she lays the eggs and raises the young. The male will bring her food through a tiny opening. If anything happens to her mate while she is nesting, she and the babies will starve.
