Canadian Province - Prince Edward Island color map

Prince Edward Island is the smallest Canadian Province nestled north of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Northumberland Strait separates it from the mainland. It is made up of about 1.4 million acres (2,195 square miles or 5,685 square km), which includes more than 200 tiny islands. The capital is Charlottetown.
The entire Province falls into the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone. This region's climate is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean giving it higher precipitation, cooler summers, warmer winters, and a generally stormier climate year-round than the mainland.

Much of Prince Edward Island's rolling landscape was once covered by Acadian (mixed) forest, but is now open farmland (48%). Where forest remains – in hedge rows, abandoned fields, and in Acadian Forest remnants, the trees include: red, black and white spruce, eastern white pine, tamarack, yellow birch, red oak, sugar maple, white and red pine, American beech and eastern hemlock.
There is also a large expanse of dunes (now protected) that form parallel to the island's northern coast and on the barrier islands.
The island has a small amount of wetlands (5%)and include some bog and fens inland and salt marshes where the rivers meet the ocean. The salt marshes are vital habitat for shorebirds.
