GUIDE FOR EVALUATING WEB SITES
(Suggested by librarians nationally)
The essential features for evaluating a website should be readily available on the site. Applying these criteria to a website containing instructional aids and curriculum resource materials on the various areas of K-12 science enables a student, teacher, or parent to judge whether or not to use the material offered by a particular site.
1. Who is responsible for the material published on the site? On opening page:
Sheri Amsel is the site creator and science coordinator. To see Sheri’s credentials go to http://www.exploringnature.org/about.html
2. What is the scope of the site's material? Sample Tour on Opening Page: http://www.exploringnature.org/nonmember/page_three.php
The website concentrates natural science (wild animals, plants, biomes, the environment, adaptations, anatomy, nature trails, invasive species, weird science, zoo animals, farm animals, science activities), art and fun (how to draw animals, mazes, habitat hidden pictures), space, nature movies, school programs, and a wildlife blog.
3. What are the sources of the site's material? On opening page: http://www.exploringnature.org/about.html
Website content is derived from the published books of Sheri Amsel and other books and websites referred to in the reference sources in the About This Site link.
4. Does the site give copyright information for the material? On the bottom of opening page: http://www.exploringnature.org/ The sites information is protected under copyright laws, unless for educational and non-salable use (as stated on the site).
Citing References on the website:
Students can learn to cite the website accurately on the bottom of every member page (once you have signed in) and at http://www.exploringnature.org/database/teacher_activity_detail.php?reference=153
5. How easy is it to search and retrieve the material? The website is set up to be easy for both educators and students to use. The animals are displayed in accurate classification categories. Plus, the top of ever page has an active search program http://www.exploringnature.org/database/page_three.php
6. How old is the information on the Website?
The site is just 2 years old and information is added, updated and edited weekly.
